Spike Your Espresso, Literally

For those who need an extra jolt in the morning, this Saeco Etienne Louis espresso machine is happy to oblige. Constructed of steel with aluminum spikes, the sphere actually hides a compartment to heat water, combining form and function brilliantly (kill, caffeinate, repeat).

And while the espresso maker only pumps out one to two cups at a time, your third guest will be too busy crapping their pants to request that you fire up the machine for a second go, and otherwise ruining post-dessert conversation. We don't know how much this beauty costs, but like a trip to the gun store, we don't recommend you attempt the five-finger discount.

Phoebus MB6000 3G Wireless Router

Sharing a 3G connection via a wireless router is nothing new, but in the past it has required a bland, sterile box built to look like a WiFi access point. That certainly isn't the case with Top Global's Phoebus, which draws its engineering innovation from the greatest engineers of all, the ancient pharaohs. Though you won't find many precious goodies buried in this little Luxor, you will find an 802.11b/g router that will share your standard 3G card (EV-DO, EDGE, etc.) with your neighbors. If internet access is scarce and your crew needs to hit MySpace in a hurry, drop your pyramid on the table and have at it.

$289 is a small price to pay for something inspired by real slave labor construction.

Fujifilm FinePix Z10fd Slim and Colorful 7MP Fashion Cam

This is the most colorful and cheesy of Fuji's camera blitz today. It's a slim fashion phone that the press release claims, to "flirt with youth." Never mind the generation Z target demographic, the Z10fd has 3x optical zoom, 2.5-inch lcd, slideshow mode, face detection tech with auto red eye removal, IR beaming, a blogging mode which reduces photo size on cam for EZ downloadin' to myspace, etc.

It does 320×240 video capture, can scale the power of its flash, has dual shot mode for back to back shots (with and without flash). and SD card compatibility on top of the crappy xD flavor we've come to not ever, ever use. The Li-on battery is good for 200 shots. The camera takes photos at up to 1600 ISO, which is what they market as image stabilization. Not really honest, if you ask me.

Competition includes the Nikon Coolpix S200, Sony's T100, and one of the random powershot cameras (possibly the SD1000 or SD750).

Fujifilm FinePix S8000fd has 8MP, 18x Zoom and 6400 ISO

I've never wanted a Fujifilm camera quite so badly as this S8000fd, the successor to the S6500fd, one of the original face recognition cams. First off, its been bumped from 6 to 8MP, still lower than the competition, but for the sake of better light sensitivity. Running in 4MP mode, more than enough for most shots, it can capture an astounding 6400 ISO (at full res it hits 1600). Then there's the gorgeous 18x zoom, which is the equivalent of a 27mm to 486mm lens.

Of course, to shoot at nearly 500mm, you'll find the dual image stabilization handy, which utilizes mechanical sensor shift, and image processing. Face recognition works to focus and expose up to 10 faces, as always, but now it does red eye reduction, on the fly. There's a 2.5 inch LCD or an LCD-viewfinder, which refreshes at 60fps. The camera itself can shoot at 15FPS at 2MP, so its questionable whether or not it'll be even half that fast at decent res. As far as video modes go, this one shoots at 640 x 480 at 30FPS.

What seals the deal is that this camera drops monogamous relations with the shitty xD format cards, picking up SD and SD-HC compatibility, too. The whole rig operates on 4 AA batteries. Doe in September at $400.

Toshiba Portege R500 1.73 Pound Ultra-Portable Notebook

The 2.4-pound Toshiba Portege R500 may have cleared the FCC, but its younger, slimmer brother just weighed in at 1.73 pounds. How did Toshiba do it? By swapping out a standard hard drive and putting in a 64GB solid-state flash drive. The R500-S5003 has no moving parts (there's no DVD drive), and will cost $2,699. If you want an integrated optical DVD SuperMulti drive, tack on another $300 and get the R500-S5004 for $2,999.

Pogue Reviews Waterproof Cams

Pogue takes a a few waterproof cams down to the local waterpark for testing and finds Sanyo's 6MP Xacti E1 to be of better image and video quality than the rest. I've always found the Xacti cam's nice, but the low light performance to be lacking. That doesn't matter when you're talking about beach and pool time, however. I believe its image quality is better than the other cams in this roundup, but it's only rated to 5 feet of depth.

He also tests two traditionally shaped 7MP cameras, the Optio W30 ($237) and Olympus's Stylus 770 SW ($270). The Olympus is a fully rugged setup, shock and extreme temperature resistant, good down to 33 feet of water; the Pentax is good for 10 feet at two hours. I've used the previous generation Pentax and loved it for hawaii conditions.

DLink’s DUB-9240 Wireless USB Hub and Adapter

D-Link's DUB-9240 Wireless USB hub was announced. For non-wireless USB equipped PCs (everything but the Lenovo T61 and Dell Inspiron 1720), the kit includes an adapter, called the DUB-1210. It operates with the four port hub (DUB-2240), which your devices connect to by cable, at the 3.4GHz to 4.5GHz range to reduce interference.

Connections are up to 480mbits per second, at 30 feet, USB2.0/1.1, and encrypted at AES-128. But as we've seen in the past, these things are never as reliable as the real wired deal. Plus, 30 feet is pretty short range. But I can see the convenience factor of not having to plug in your components every time you enter a room with a laptop, but only if your adapter is built inside. Oh, each adapter can address 3 hubs. This stuff will be available in Q4 for $220 for the hub and $120 for the adapter. Me? I'll stick with a $5 USB cable for now. For the record, IOGEAR has a comparable, and also USB-IF certified setup. Little details were available.

Kanguru’s Eco Drive is the World’s Most Energy Efficient

Kanguru claims that by reducing power consumption by up to 75%, it can both extend the life of your hard drive and be eco-conscious at the same time.
The Eco Drive works by going into an idle mode after three seconds of inactivity, which has 80% of normal power consumption, and standby mode after three minutes of inactivity, which works at 10-20% of normal power consumption.

And when you don't touch it for five minutes, it goes into power-down mode and uses 5-10% of the normal power. Even if you don't care about the environment (who does?), this is a good way to preserve your laptop's battery while you're on the go.

Star Wars Darth Vader Laptop

Who better to teach your kids than the Dark Lord of the Sith? This Star Wars Darth Vader Laptop is geared toward young, malleable minds (and, secretly, the rest of us) and employs a lightsaber-shaped pointing device to select from 50 different games. Children can expect to have their memory, typing abilities, and coordination tested, while building their reflexes and musical talents. The product description makes no mention of what Force powers the laptop teaches, but, true to Vader's usual antics, "breathtaking activities" are hinted at.

Parents need to provide three AA batteries for the laptop to work and there is a headphone jack for quiet play. The provided lightsaber might not cut through any material in the galaxy, but it does make noise when it's moved around. Interestingly, your child can also choose to learn as a Jedi, though Vader still acts as the teacher. Yeah, we all know how that'll turn out.

Fossil OLED Watches Tell Time, Impersonate Better Gadgets

OLEDs are finding their way onto all sorts of gadgets these days, from ridiculously overpriced keyboards to weird flexible screens that serve little purpose. It appears that watchmaker Fossil will soon be joining the ranks of the OLED purveyors with their officially unannounced men's watches.

This isn't the first time we've seen an OLED watch, but this one isn't being billed as a miniature theater for your wrist.

OLEDs are great technology; they provide color and animation while consuming less power than LEDs or LCDs (which require backlighting). But if you need your watch to do much more than tell you what time it is, you're probably using it wrong or missing some other crucial, multipurpose gadget (like a cellphone, smartphone or PDA). Fossil is still playing hard to get on this one, so there is no word on pricing or availability just yet.

Sanyo Easy Streetnav NVM-4070 GPS

Sanyo, not the first name you think of when you dream of GPS navigators, just came out with the NVM-4070, equipped with a 4-inch, 16:9 touchscreen, a SiRF Star III receiver, traffic, text-to-speech for reading off street names, 1.8 million points of interest, Video/Photo/MP3/WMA playback and an FM transmitter to get the nav and music channeled through your car stereo.

It also has Bluetooth for phone functionality, including address book sync and speakerphone. (I assume when a call comes in, it shows callerID and pauses your music, but don't quote me on that.) It has an SD card slot and a lousy 64MB of internal storage. My bet is at $500, it's not a big HDD. There's a $400 version (NVM-4050), which loses auto-rerouting, traffic, photo and video playback and the FM transmitter.

IceBar Waterproof iPod Nano Speaker

The iceBar moves the party stereo from the poolside into the pool, securely holding your iPod in a waterproof polycarbonate case. It floats, too, though it has a wrist strap if you're worried about it drifting off. The nano's clickwheel, power and mute functions are all accessible with the case on. The iceBar does have one drawback, though.

Sounds like it's a little bit of a battery hog since it burns through three AA batteries after 18 hours of continuous play. Still, if you have either the first- or second- generation nano and often find yourself poolside (and with people who share your taste in music), the iceBar might help get through the summer—that is, if developer Atlantic didn't have plans for their speaker case to be released this holiday season. The iceBar should cost around $70.

New $300 Wal-Mart PC is Bloatware-Free

Shanling MC-30 iPod Dock Has CD Player, Radio, Tube Amps

Saitek’s Cyborg PC Controller Has Precision Snipe Mode

If this sounds familiar, that's because the Splitfish FragFX controller does the same thing, except for the PS3.

There's also the Xbox 360-like design of the Cyborg, which is perfect for all the ports of Xbox 360 games heading to Games for Windows this year. Uvex Uvision Magic Ski Goggles With LCD Lens

While changing light conditions can be an issue in most sports it’s particularly problematic when you’re out skiing or snowboarding since all that white snow works like a giant reflector. It usually means you have to carry a second pair of ski goggles or even sunglasses for when things get too bright but Uvex has now made that unnecessary with their Uvision line of goggles.

The ‘magic’ used in the pair pictured above is actually liquid crystal technology that is applied to a double lens allowing the goggles to instantly switch between a high-contrast or darker setting with a simple push of a button. The goggles are powered by an easily replaced single AAA battery providing up to 200 hours of use which will probably keep working well after the snow has melted.

The Uvex Uvision Magic goggles will be available starting in September for $230 and there other slightly cheaper versions also available.

Speakers made of china from Japan are square in shape

We have seen numerous speakers from Japan. But this one is unique not because of its specs but more because of the substance it is made of – china (Porcelain was first made in China and so today anything made of it is said to be made of china). I thought porcelain was only used in the making of beautiful artifacts and attractive kitchen ware. A speaker is yet unheard of. But folks in Japan are always dishing out stuff that you and I can not even think of.

Designer Noboru Kawamura believed that china will provide a warm, tender sound that traditional wood or plastic enclosures can’t achieve. Though no info about the other features, all we know is that they measure 5″ (w) x 5″ (d) x 6″ (h). They perfect for your desk or bed side table. Don’t think they are capable of doling out glass-shattering noise.

You can order from Boo-Hoo-Woo, for ¥48,000 a pair (about $392 US dollars). Now that’s the shop’s name buddy. I haven’t played any games here.

PSP Clone is a Torrent Playing Machine

Do you dream of a portable media player that has NES, SNES & SEGA MD/SMS emulation whilst also handling DIVX & XVID in its stride? Do you also dream of having a Playboy mansion and a bigger willy? Well, on the first account at least this is sure to help: Witness the thoughtfully titled 'Portable Media Player'.

If the $109 Portable Media Player were a tin of sardines, it would be crammed so tight with salty fish you wouldn't be able to get the lid on.

Thankfully, instead of salty fish the PMP supports all of the following: (deep breath): MP3, WMA, FLAC; Emulation - NES, SNES, SEGA MD/SMC; Picture viewing and Video playback support for AVI, MPEG-4, DIVX, XVID.

This bad boy further comes with a 1.3MP camera with an option for VHS quality video recording, 1GB onboard with an SD slot which supports up to a further 4GB. With a 3.6" screen and a decent battery, (20hrs music / 6hrs video), I can more than happily look past the Tomy toys outer casing.

That aside one reviewer really sums up this media beast better than I ever could:

DreamVision’s DreamBee HD Projectors

The DreamBee is a 3-chip 1080p LCOS (liquid crystal on silicon) projector that is capable of a whopping 15,000:1 contrast ratio. That's a massive jump over most HD projectors, which hover around the 12,000:1 range. Undeniably awesome, but the DreamBee has got a hard fight ahead of it with cheaper, though still powerful alternatives, like the Panasonic PT-AE1000U and the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 1080.

DreamBees come in a variety of colors and two flavors: standard and pro. The standard model's got the usual hookups, as well as two spots for HDMI, and a lamp that's 1000 lumens bright with a life of 2,000 hours. There's also a professional model, the DreamBee Pro. The pro model comes bundled with an external video processor and scaler that gives the user more source management options. The DreamBee Pro can handle twice as many inputs as the standard version—an impressive four HDMI inputs for the pro model, which is double what the Panasonic PT-AE1000U offers.

Despite its sleek design, the DreamBee's got a massive footprint that might be hard to handle at nearly 23" wide, 18.5" long, and 8" tall, not to mention it weighs 25 pounds. It's definitely made for a long-term home theater setup, without portability in mind. If you don't gawk at the size of the unit, you might at the price: over $14,000 for the standard, and $19,000 for the DreamBee Pro.

The Beauty Sophia Nani from Japan

It would seem that a certain black-and-silver phone has attracted a bit of a following in the design department. The Japan-only Sophia Nani, launching next week, sports a massive 4.3" touchscreen TFT display running at a crisp 800×400 resolution. A digital TV tuner rounds out a complete multimedia package, but one crucial feature will inevitably doom this newborn phone to the "design-only" box: Windows CE.

Yes, the beauty of the Nani is deceiving. The onboard WiFi capabilities will be handicapped by a sub-par web browser and multimedia capabilities will be bogged down by Windows Media Player 10. While the dual cameras are a unique addition (VGA in front, SVGA in back), the Nani boasts a simple Micro SD card slot in lieu of a more robust storage option like a hard drive. While it certainly won't challenge anything else out there for dominance of the phone/PMP market, the Sophia Nani is proof of the new design direction cell phones are heading in.

iLive’s Extra-Wide iPod Surround Speakerbar

The unit also has a headphone jack. Weird.

Now why would you plug in your iPod just to use the dock's headphone port? Once your iPod is docked, you can control it by the player's buttons, or by remote. It's got pretty much everything else you'd expect in the way of frills, from the usual AM/FM tuner to a backlit LCD clock that has an alarm, too. Expect to pay around $350

This has now led to the PS3 outselling the popular Nintendo Wii.

The price of the Sony Playstation 3 is now $499, that is a massive $100 saving, although it is still the most expensive console on the market it shows that it has been the price which is the cause poor sales, a problem that Sony are now trying to rectify.

80GB Sony PS3 includes Rumblaxis: SIXAXIS rumble controller

Sony knows that their new PS3 has had some trouble in the past when it came to the games console market, but now it seems that the Playstation 3 means business. Firstly they announce price cuts which we will see in August, but now they are really starting to pile the pressure on the Xbox 360 by rumors that the upcoming release of the 80GB PS3 could include the much anticipated Rumblaxis, the SIXAXIS rumble controller.

The reason for all this speculation of the new SIXAXIS controller, is that on the new 80GB Sony PS3 box it show a red-light on the controller, which many assume it could well be the new Rumblaxis rumble controller. It is possible for these rumors to be true, why else would they delay the launch of the 80GB Playstation 3 until August.

Evolution of Apple in 30 Years

For those who haven't seen the project, designer Edwin Tofslie assembled nearly every Apple product from the company's history into one giant picture. And studying the trends while they're all laid out is like re-watching The Sixth Sense—pretty obvious in retrospect.

My critical analysis: square, circle, square. And though there are a few abnormalities in the line that show even Apple didn't know when the taste tides were changing, like 1996's abnormally curvy Performa, the statement is ultimately quite cohesive. It's like paging through old fashion magazines, but way, way, way geekier (yes, we just used "way" three times in a row). Hit the link for a gigantic version that you can actually appreciate.

The $100 PS3 Pricedrop

Word of a potential $100 PS3 price reduction has turned from rumor into denial into confirmed-but-still-rumor. Luckily, our sister site Kotaku has been following the story closer than anyone else on the web, and here is the epic tale according to them:

ACT I: JUICY RUMOR
A Circuit City promotion flier leaks, showing the PS3 at $499 for the week of July 15th-21st.

ACT II: DENIAL
Sony freaks, going on damage control and denying the rumors that the PS3 will ever be reduced in price (even though they admitted that gameplan just weeks before).

ACT III: ESSENTIALLY CONFIRMED (BUT STILL TECHNICALLY A RUMOR)
A merchandising manager for a major retailer confesses to the price drop.
Then, Kotaku's moles at both Best Buy and Circuit City check inventory listings. They both confirm the $499 price.

Satellite Radio Receivers Already Capable of XM & Siruis

In highly technical communications to the FCC, a man named Michael Hartleib makes a strong argument for the possibility of current satellite radios becoming interoperable—or gaining the ability to switch between Sirius and XM as easily as traditional radios do AM and FM.

A firmware download could be all that's needed to upgrade the players…that is, if XM and Sirius followed FCC regulations and produced interoperable receivers in the first place. From the way Hartleib tells the story, XM and Sirius are more interested in selling you newer, "dual-mode" tech…

"Dual-mode" allows both signals to be downloaded to a radio at once, as if you were receiving AM and FM concurrently. But that difference—between needing or not needing to switch between music providers—would not be worth the cost of upgrading components to most consumers.

WildCharger for RAZR and iPod Nano

WildCharge has finally announced their first production unit—the Motorola RAZR. For $89.99, you get the starter bundle including charging pad and phone adapter. The adapter is really a back plate replacement for the RAZR that has a "charging arm" that plugs into the phone.

In other words, wires are involved, just not between the charging pad and the phone itself. Expect sales to being sometime this month, possibly tomorrow if they are on schedule. The second device to be produced by WildCharger will work with the iPod Nano.

Pricing will be the same as for the RAZR, and it will be available in August. The only way the WildCharger is economical, or even practical, is if you can use it with all your mobile devices. Hopefully the company will ramp up production and introduce units more often than one/month

Thanko Spydisk Memory Card Pen

While memory card readers are a dime a dozen, they are only useful for those moments when you've forgotten your USB cord. The Thanko Spydisk, a memory card reader in a pen, may not be the most spycentric device in the world, but it will bring another function to tired card readers.
Bundling a pen with a USB SD card reader, the Spydisk is so much more gentlemanly than poison darts or miniature cameras. But at nearly $50, we'd prefer something bundled to help us cheat at poker/roulette/bingo to help subsidize the inflated cost.

Motorola i425 cell phone for Boost Mobile

Motorola i425 cell phone for Boost Mobile looks pretty snazzy and hip in its slim avatar. It uses iDEN technology (integrated digital enhanced network, multiple communication devices all-in-one) therefore can boast of being the slimmest walkie-talkie phone. Boost Mobile even add the “environmentally friendly packaging” to earn a few brownie points. Weighing just 3.9 ounces, the phone is less than half an inch thick. The i425 features wireless Web, text and multimedia messaging, AOL, Yahoo and MSN instant messaging plus Java-enabled games and applications, voice-activated dialing, GPS and ringtones.
